"For there is good news yet to hear & fine things to be seen, before we go to paradise by way of Kensal Green". By GK Chesterton. The first of the mahoosive commercial cemeteries opened in London. Recorded in the Penny Magazine as "The first practical attempt to remedy a great public inconvenience". In 1833 out of the 54acres 39acres were consecrated leaving the remaining 15acres for dissenters. It has mahoosive Doric arched entrance with 3 avenues. The central avenue has an Anglican Church with Doric porch and flanking colonnades. Beneath which lie mahoosive catacombs. At the East is an Ionic nonconformist Chapel and under the North walled colonnades are more catacombs.George 3rd's children are buried here. Along with Isambard Brunel elder and younger and the elder's wife Sonia. Thackeray, Anthony Trollope, Wilkie Collins, Charles Blondin and Freddie Mercury to name a few of the many famous laid to rest here.It is very beautiful and atmospheric. Take a picnic and a camera!Purposefully left to overgrow so wild flowers can seed and wildlife thrive.Nearest station is Kensal Rise. In close proximity to Ladbroke Grove.

Final resting place of the wonderfully humble Christine Keeler

Come here for a peaceful stroll on my lunch breaks during the summer months. Truly lovely in the sunshine, and not at all morbid. There are some interesting tombs and gravestones but more than anything it's just a nice way to kill an hour, away from the chaos of Ladbroke Grove.
