A nice place just to get away
As a casual passing visitor on a very cold winter's day, the Park offered a welcome natural break in the midst of suburbia. It was easy to see how much work has gone into the Park already, but it is what it is - an Ecology Park. The sign at the Park's entrance says:Historically Newton Farm has been a Saxon tithing, a mediaeval common field and a Victorian sewage farm. After the construction of the Metropolitan Line, the surroundings changed from a haymaking community to suburban metroland. The wildlife reduced dramatically in variety and numbers. It is hoped that the ecology park will attract many of the lost species back to the area.The ecology park incorporates a flood-relief facility which retains water on the site for long periods. This enables growth of wetland plants and will attract a new range of animals, birds and insects.Spring and summer flowering meadows have been sown. A woodland belt, using native species, was introduced to provide shelter, screening and definition of the grassland areas.How the park is managedThe spring and summer meadows will be left uncut until the wildflowers and grasses have flowered and shed ripe seeds. The trees and shrubs in the woodland belt will develop naturally. Pioneer tree species, such as alder and birch, will be removed over the years, to allow space for trees, such as oak and ash, to dominate. Leaf litter and decaying wood will encourage wildlife.How you can helpEach creature or plant has others to depend upon it. It is important to leave the balance of nature disturbed. Look and listen carefully and you may find more wildlife. Join a local nature conservation group and help protect London's wildlife heritage.
