Best place for bio diversity; wild meadow flowers, coppiced Hazel hedgerows, Hazel dormice. Church Fields runs from West Street to St Mary's Church Yard and onto four acres of Ancient Mendonca Forest. Muntjacs can be heard barking after dark, along with fox cubs, tawny owls, and lots of bats.
Metropolitan Open Land growing Wild Geranium, Narcissus and Yellow Orchids on this Common Land, currently held in loco parentis by Harrow School (presently leased to Harrow Council). Spot Sparrowhawks, Kestrels, Tawney Owls, Goldfinches, Soprano Pipistrelle Bats, Meadow voles, foxes, muntjacs and rare Dormice. Pick wild hazelnuts, raspberries, Chestnuts, blackberries. Discover grapevines hidden in the Hazlenut hedgerows. Church Fields is remarkably rich in Bio diversity. Beautiful scenery, Grade 1 Borough Listed, Metropolitan Open Land with interesting Pagan history of Gmeningas tribe and Druidic worship from 747 A.D to 1090 A.D. Last vestiges of medieval farming in terraces still evident. Wheat grows wild next to Sheep's Fescue grass, Timothy and wild meadow flowers.Visit 13th Century Pye House at the foot of Churchfields, adjoining the Powerhouse, en route to West Street. Capital Ring footpath runs through Church Fields, from West Street to Roxborough Park, with many ancient footpaths running off it, such as the route from West Street to Church Fields via the Mediaeval Old Pye House, and several footpaths to the 1000 year old, Norman St. Mary's Church. Churchfields appears in the Warner Bros film 'Me Before You'; Emily Clarke descends the path down Churchfields and walks to her 'home' in Nelson Road, both locations featuring largely in the film.
It is my favourite place on earth so far. I like to go there to think, eat with breeze caressing my cheeks and especially witness the glory of the setting sun without any obstruction.But that's during summer.During winter it can be brutal up there. There is nothing blocking the wind so it is even colder than anywhere else. But the sunsets make it all worthwhile.
